Whether a sole proprietorship,a partnership or a company, every business has at it's root the owner as it's most important human capital. The owner of a business is it's most vital resource,an asset whose value determines the value of the business. To this end,how well endowed with the right qualities for business success the owner is ,is of prime importance to the well being of the business. For purposes of this discussion,we will focus on active owners like those present in a sole proprietorship or partnership or private limited companies, and not the passive owners to be found in public companies.

A business owner needs to uphold the right virtues of fairness, hard work, persistence and to be stoic in the face of challenges that are inevitable in business. These qualities have to be developed through a deliberate process of personal development where the individual interacts with the right social circle, takes the necessary calculated risks, and takes care to be spiritually balanced.Creativity is a must have for a business owner,as it helps one to adapt to changing micro or macro environments, but creativity is an ability that needs to be nurtured to yield it's full bloom. This can only happen through personal development where one is put into situations requiring creativity...experience becomes the right teacher for this ability.

When I started my first business at the age of ten,I was just an excited kid testing whether he can actually make some money, money I didn't know what to use it for and would give it all to my dad after selling the avocado seedlings. Now as a thirty year old entrepreneur I still get the same thrill, but more importantly it's not my reason for starting a business anymore,I have developed to starting a business to exploit an opportunity in the market place.

This requires being able to spot the opportunity, and being capable of mobilizing the resources necessary to profit from the opportunity, both of which are abilities that take time to develop. In my case it took being an employee for 8 years to be able to develop to the point that I could use my CPA skills  in an enterprise of my own,and indeed my first business as an adult was a CPA firm, which is still one of my most lucrative ventures, the accounting firm Joseph Mambo and Associates, based in Nairobi Kenya, but serving the greater East African region.Moving from a business selling avocado seedlings to a firm in 20 years is a marker for personal development, and takes into account development through acquiring new skills.

Personal development also requires being willing to try new things. You can't afford to ave comfort zones in your business life. This is a case of being willing to challenge yourself by venturing into virgin territory. In my case this has been starting a merchandising business, after the firm which is a service business. The business approach changes completely, but both thrive, because the owner is a dynamic individual.

Lastly, any business requires a team, either directly or indirectly involved, and to get the best out of the business team, one needs to be able to communicate clearly and effectively. In business this could take the form of how well can you write?,Or say well what you want to say? This is because any serious business at whatever scale will require good communication with the team, like sharing the business plan, the marketing plan, investment proposals with investors and day to day communication to get everyone in your team working towards the same goals.

So go ahead and scale up on personal development for business success!
